Program Notes

Dorce is a series of 9 pieces, all using the same three parts (Violin, Viola and Violoncello), whereas the third part also exists in a transcription for a second Violin. Indeed, with those 3 parts, you can play as much as 4 Soli, 4 Duetts and 1 String Trio, all without changing even 1 note.

That's where the title comes from: not only as an anagram of “Corde" (= String), but also in the meaning of a knot out of which you can pull string after string.

As indeed in the 4 Duetts and the Trio the different Soli are evolving more and more into a knot, to find their individuality again by the end.

Dorce est une série de 9 pièces, toutes basées sur les mêmes 3 parties (Violon, Alto et Violoncelle). En effet, avec ces 3 parties, on peut jouer 4 Solos, 4 Duos et 1 Trio à Cordes, tout ça sans changer aucune note C'est de là d'ailleurs que vient le titre: pas seulement comme anagram de “Corde", mais aussi dans la signification d'un nœud dont on peut retirer fil par fil.

Comme effectivement dans les 4 Duos et le Trio les différentes Solos se mettent peu à peu dans un nœud, pour se séparer de nouveau à la fin dans leur individualité.

Dorce is een reeks van 9 stukken, alle gebaseerd op dezelfde drie melodieën (voor respectievelijk viool, altviool en cello). Met deze 3 melodieën kan je in allerlei combinaties niet minder dan 4 solostukken, 4 duetten en 1 strijktrio spelen, zonder ook maar 1 noot te wijzigen.

Daarvan komt trouwens ook de titel: niet enkel als anagram van "Corde" (= snaar), maar ook in de betekenis van een streng, een knoop, waar je draad per draad uit kan halen.

Zoals in de 4 duos en het trio de verschillende melodieën zich ook effectief beetje bij beetje in een knoop verstrengelen, om aan het einde opnieuw uit elkaar te gaan, ieder in haar eigen individualiteit.

Comments

... Dorce is een uiterst intens werk, dat ondanks zijn korte duur en relatief weinig drukte een zeer sterke indruk laat. De toonspraak  en de  vereiste  instrumentale technieken, die enorme beheersing vergen , zijn heel origineel, vernieuwend en voor mij inspirerend. Het is een pareltje van diepgaande emotie, wars van "goedkope " effekten of overtolligheid, dat toch niet vervalt in een onthechte ascese. (Viviane Spanoghe)

Notes for the performers

Dorce is a series of 9 pieces, all using the same three parts, whereas the third part also exists in a transcription for a second Violin. In fact, you can play Dorce as a Solo piece, which gives you four different solo pieces (Dorce I for Violin Solo, Dorce II for Viola Solo, Dorce III for Violoncello Solo, Dorce IV for Violin Solo). You can also play Dorce as a Duett, which gives you four different Duetts (Dorce V for Violin and Violoncello, Dorce VI for Viola and Violoncello, Dorce VII for Violin and Viola, Dorce VIII for two Violins). And, last but not least, you can play Dorce as a classical String Trio (Dorce IX). Each of the three parts remains exactly the same for all nine versions, so that e.g. Dorce I and Dorce III played together gives you Dorce V. Just take into account the exact starting moment of the different parts ( in this specific case: the Violin should start 5 bars later than the Violoncello).
