Curriculum

  • Education : Royal Conservatory of Brussels (1983 1992) : "Premier Prix" for, among others, "History of Music", "Cello", "Chamber Music", "Practical Harmony" and "Composition"; Queen Elisabeth College of Music in Waterloo (Belgium) : master degree for Composition with Mr. A. Laporte (1989 1992); Master Classes with Mr. M. Finnissy (1993) and Mr. B. Ferneyhough (1998); VUB (2008-2009) : "Doctor in the Arts" with Dr J.P. Van Bendegem.
  • Honours : the "Prijs CERA * Jeugd en Muziek Vlaanderen 1991" for his complete works and the "Provinciale Prijs voor Muziekcompositie 1992 van de provincie Antwerpen" for his opera "The petrifying Blue". He also wrote original music for the BRTN-film "Andres", realised by Dirk Greyspeirt, on a choreography of José Besprosvany, that won the "Premio Coreografo Elettronico 1993" in Naples and the "34e Prijs Bert Leysen" in 1995. In 1997 his piece "Quar'l" is awarded the "Prix de Musique Contemporaine" de Québec and "Canzone" wins the "National Composition Contest" of the Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition of Belgium, a honor which "Ciaccona" repeats in 2001. In 2005 "Laureaat van de Koninklijke Vlaamse Academie van België voor Wetenschappen en Kunsten".
  • Compositions include soloworks, ensemble and chamber music pieces for diverse instruments (incl. electronic ), lieder, symphonies, tone poems, concerti, cantatas, ballets, films and music theatre. Many of them are recorded (radio, TV and CD). Performances in Ars Musica, Bozar, Flanders Festival, Flagey, Gaudeamus, la Monnaie, Festivalul Meridian, Festival Moraviae, ISCM World Music Days, Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ, November Music, deSingel, Shanghai New Music Week, Société de Musique Contemporaine de Québec, Transit and Wien Modern. Amongst his performers are Belgian National Orchestre, BRTN Philharmonic Orchestra, Champ d’Action, Quatuor Danel, Quatuor Diotima, Goeyvaerts String Trio, Luxembourg Sinfonietta, Oxalys, Royal Symphonic Band of the Belgian Guides, I Solisti del Vento, Spectra Ensemble and Ensemble Télémaque.
  • Member of the Union of Belgian Composers since 1993 and vice president of the Componisten Archipel Vlaanderen 2004-2011. Founding member and president of ISCM-Vlaanderen 2005-2013. Member of the ISCM Executive Committee 2007-2008, ISCM vice-president 2008-2013, ISCM president 2013-2019. Member of the Royal Flemish Academy of Begium for Science and the Arts since 2018.
  • Teaches Cello at Music Schools in the period 1990 * 1997. Since 1992, teaches Analysis, later also Music Technology (2002) and Composition (2004) at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. Involved in a project on software developping for eartraining at the Leuven University 1997-2004, and on musical analysis with the Brussels University 2004-2015. Director of the Royal Conservatory Brussels 2008-2017.
  • Free-lance activities for the VRT-television (= dutch speaking Belgian television) 1991-2008, including concert recordings by a. o. BRT-Filharmonisch Orkest, Koninklijk Filharmonisch Orkest van Vlaanderen, I Fiammingi, Anima Eterna, Concertgebouw Orkest, Bayerische Rundfunk, Queen Elisabeth competition, NHK, ...) in Belgium, the Netherlands (Maastricht) and Russia (St. Petersburg), and opera recordings by a.o. La Petite Bande (Pergolesi), the Vlaamse Opera Stichting (Madame Butterfly, Rigoletto), Opera Hall (La Bohème, Carmen, Aïda) and the Royal Opéra deMunt (Carmen, Idomeneo, Orphée aux Enfers, l’Italiana in Algeri, Le Nozze di Figaro). Frequently asked since 1994 by a.o. Champ d'Action, VRO, Flanders Festival and Ars Musica to perform Live Electronics in close collaboration with a.o. Jonathan Harvey, Klaus Huber, Kaija Saariaho, Walter Zimmermann, Avanti!, Hélio ensemble, Karlheinz Essl, Orm Finnendahl, Marc Appelbaum, Tan Dun, James Wood, Arditti Quartet and Danel Quartet, and/or as sound producer for CD recordings.
