Program Note

"IdoVisu" is a one movement piece for hobo solo and orchestra, based on an elaborated metamorphosis from one theme to another. Hence its title. "IdoVisu" is in fact an anagram of the ancient latin poet "Ovidius", whose best known masterpieces are his "Metamorphosen". Also, "IdoVisu" contains both "Ido", from the ancient Greek "Eidon" which means "Illusion", and the ancient Latin "Visus" which means "Face". So, we're dealing with the problem of "reality" versus "illusion", which was so typical for the Baroque Era. Hence the frequent use of "Basso Continuo" techniques in the piece, and the fact that it's not a real concerto, but more like a kind of a concerto grosso for soloist and orchestra. So, at the beginning there seems to be an opposition between the very lyrical theme of the hobo, and the more rythmical theme of the orchestra. But at the end of the piece they both appear to be only two different versions of the same base idea (the duo between hobo solo and english horn)... To all this, the piece adds a definite contemporary dimension by its orchestration (with a.o. two synthesizers) and the special playing techniques used (mainly in the solo part).

Happy listening, Peter Swinnen

About the Electronics

The WoodController (during the first performance a Yahama WX7, linked to a Kurzweil K2000) should be reproduced out from a single speaker beside the player, and uses the following programs:

  • Sinus to Ringmodulator: the sinus from the Synthesizer (K2000) goes to the Y-input of the Ringmodulator, whereas a microphone, from the Oboe-Solo, goes directly to the X-input of the Ringmodulator. The output of the Ringmodulator goes (through a little bit of reverb) to the speaker beside the WoodController player. The sounding result should be: the live sound of the Oboe, coloured by a Ringmodulated sound from beside the WoodController)
  • Sinus (sounding): the same sinus, but this time without Ringmodulation, sounding from the speaker beside the WoodController player.
  • Bass-flute: a rather realistic sampled sound of a classic bass-flute, sounding from the speaker beside the WoodController player.

The StringController (during the first performance: a Zeta, linked to a(nother) Kurzweil K2000) should be reproduced out from a(nother) single speaker beside the player, and uses the following programs:

  • Stones: the (down)sampled sound of two medium-sized stones sticked together, without the typical attack (so, only the "resonance"), sounding from the speaker beside the StringController player.
  • Chinese Violin: the (up)sampled sound of a traditional chinese violin (an "Erh"), also sounding from the speaker beside the StringController player
